With high security reception and storage facilities, a rail distribution terminal and considered to be one of the most versatile and efficient handling terminals in the UK, the Port of Tyne operates one of the largest car transhipment terminals in Europe.

During the last ten years, the Port of Tyne’s ambitious reinvestment programme has earned it the accolade of Port Operator of the Year at the prestigious Lloyd’s List London awards 2008, to add

to the Institute of Transport Management’s award of European Port of Year 2008 for the second year in succession.

The Port has strengthened its capability to help customers meet their wide ranging supply chain challenges, with notable success in the automotive industry.

Port of TyneNissan operate out of the 30 ha Tyne Car Terminal located in Tyne Dock on the south side of the river Tyne in South Shields and imports, exports and transships vehicles to world-wide destinations. Nissan are also joined by other manufacturers who share the routes such as Subaru and Honda and recent new markets supplied through the Tyne include Russia and the Ukraine.

Volkswagen Group’s 20 ha vehicle import facility on the north side of the river at North Shields, developed by the Port of Tyne at a cost of £5.6 million, has created a secure storage facility for 9,000 cars.

Port of TyneVehicles handled at the Nissan and VW terminals increased from 300,000 units in 2002 to just under 600,000 in 2008. Between 1995 and 2006 almost £20 million was invested in the Port’s car terminals. In 2005 the Port of Tyne was ranked tenth largest car transshipment facility in Europe.

The Port of Tyne also acts as a distribution route for machinery and heavy equipment, an operation handled by Nissan Shipping Agencies and the Port of Tyne Logistics Services offers customers state of the art secure warehousing and distribution, a service proving increas-ingly popular for customers specialising in the distribution of automotive parts.

The Port of Tyne is unique as the only UK trust port to provide a seamless logistics service in-house. A key player in the Tyne & Wear region, the Port is a dynamic trading hub with five business sectors comprising conventional cargoes, supply chain services (container handling, warehousing, distribution, rail services), car terminals, International Passenger Terminal (cruise and ferries) and estates.
