After gaining a BA (Hons) in Government and Public Policy Matthew joined the East Durham Development Agency as a researcher before moving to the Seaham Harbour Dock Company as Commercial Manager.
In 1996 Matthew joined the Port of Tyne as Commercial Manager and he has been instrumental in developing the port's conventional cargo business, with particular success in coal.
